The freight committee is an affiliation of liner agents which once fortnightly reports to the branch office all ocean freight accounts receivable in the export business which have not been paid in due time. The reports are assessed here and measures decided in a working committee are implemented against defaulters. The members are informed of the results by means of a circular.
Forwarding agents and exporters who participate sign a special obligation note which can be obtained via the branch office. Conversely, the forwarding agent/exporter receives a “freight prepaid B/L“ for an export shipment without prior freight payment, but is obligated to pay within a period of 15 working days after the date of the bill of lading. It is important to note, however, that no liner agent is obligated to hand out prepaid bills of lading without payment of the freight due to the signing of an obligation note. In fact, he can decide in each case for himself whether to grant payment deferral. Should the forwarding agent/exporter not pay, the freight committee will take concerted sanction measures with the forwarding agents associations.

The pupils look for a company that takes on trainees, apply and with a little luck they will be employed after a successful application interview, which may also include a test. Then a training contract will be concluded which generally has a term of three years or, in the case of an adequate educational background and good achievements, can be reduced to 2 ½ or even 2 years.
During the vocational course, trainees visit the vocational school (BSGAV, Ellmersstr. 24) on two days a week.

This training course is oriented to graduates with a general certificate of secondary education and an average grade of at least 3.3 in the subjects German, English and mathematics. Above all, a grade “inadequate” is not acceptable in any one of these subjects.
An essential precondition for admission is proof of the conclusion of a preliminary contract. The companies which take part in this model commit themselves to enter into a vocational training relationship with the applicants who have successfully completed the one-year Commercial College as future shipping agents. The training contract for 2 ½ years is then guaranteed. When training has been successfully completed, the graduates even get an advanced technical college entrance qualification.

This is a time-saving training course in which the classic training is combined with a dual course of studies at the BIHV (Bremen Institute for Trade and Transport). The training generally takes 6 semesters, that is 3 years. With the combination of training, vocational college and course of studies, the students attain on the one hand theoretical scientific knowledge, and on the other hand the social and professional qualifications for a successful future. After completing the course of studies as Betriebswirt/-in in Verkehr/Logistik, BiVL (business administrator in transport/logistics) a bachelor degree or even a master degree can be attained on-the-job at a cooperation institute.
