Freight Committee

The freight committee is an affiliation of liner agents which once fortnightly reports to the branch office all ocean freight accounts receivable in the export business which have not been paid in due time. The reports are assessed here and measures decided in a working committee are implemented against defaulters. The members are informed of the results by means of a circular.
Forwarding agents and exporters who participate sign a special obligation note which can be obtained via the branch office. Conversely, the forwarding agent/exporter receives a “freight prepaid B/L“ for an export shipment without prior freight payment, but is obligated to pay within a period of 15 working days after the date of the bill of lading. It is important to note, however, that no liner agent is obligated to hand out prepaid bills of lading without payment of the freight due to the signing of an obligation note. In fact, he can decide in each case for himself whether to grant payment deferral. Should the forwarding agent/exporter not pay, the freight committee will take concerted sanction measures with the forwarding agents associations.

Training

SHIPPING AGENT male/female

Shipping agent is a recognised training profession. Young people interested in foreign languages, cultures and people have special opportunities. The main tasks include organising, planning and supervising the transportation of goods via sea, as well as on land.

Thus a range of tasks is defined, from ship handling in the port to activities in sales or finance, to dealing with containers, rolling loads, general cargo and grain to Internet and e-commerce, providing you with the opportunity to put into practice in a variety of firms the focus of your interests. Shipping agents have the rare advantage that their training is recognised all over the world and that, unlike in many other professions, they can pursue their profession anywhere in the world. Furthermore, shipping agents are not only active in ports but also inland in the sales offices of brokers and shipping companies, in large-scale industry which imports and exports, in insurance companies, banks and many more.

There are two fields of training: scheduled shipping and tramp shipping. In scheduled shipping you deal with ships which operate on fixed routes according to a fixed schedule. This primarily involves catering for the transportation of containers, general cargo or automotive vehicles. Tramp shipping is oriented to concrete demand and individual assignments. Ships in tramp shipping operate on various routes and serve various ports of loading and unloading. Mainly bulk goods such as coal, grain and crude oil are transported, but also project shipments (specially large or heavy goods, such as factory plants disassembled into individual parts).

If you also love the flair of ships and ports, then our line of business is right for you. If you would like to know more, click on the career information section of the Bundesagentur für Arbeit (Federal Employment Agency) and search for shipping agent (male / female).

There are three ways to become a shipping agent:

The classic vocational training course for very good secondary school and grammar school pupils

The pupils look for a company that takes on trainees, apply and with a little luck they will be employed after a successful application interview, which may also include a test. Then a training contract will be concluded which generally has a term of three years or, in the case of an adequate educational background and good achievements, can be reduced to 2 ½ or even 2 years.

During the vocational course, trainees visit the vocational school (BSGAV, Ellmersstr. 24) on two days a week.

EHH/DQ (one-year commercial college course /dual qualification) for committed and motivated secondary school pupils

This training course is oriented to graduates with a general certificate of secondary education and an average grade of at least 3.3 in the subjects German, English and mathematics. Above all, a grade “inadequate” is not acceptable in any one of these subjects.
An essential precondition for admission is proof of the conclusion of a preliminary contract. The companies which take part in this model commit themselves to enter into a vocational training relationship with the applicants who have successfully completed the one-year Commercial College as future shipping agents. The training contract for 2 ½ years is then guaranteed. When training has been successfully completed, the graduates even get an advanced technical college entrance qualification.

Classic vocational training linked with business administration course of studies (Bremen model)

This is a time-saving training course in which the classic training is combined with a dual course of studies at the BIHV (Bremen Institute for Trade and Transport). The training generally takes 6 semesters, that is 3 years. With the combination of training, vocational college and course of studies, the students attain on the one hand theoretical scientific knowledge, and on the other hand the social and professional qualifications for a successful future. After completing the course of studies as Betriebswirt/-in in Verkehr/Logistik, BiVL (business administrator in transport/logistics) a bachelor degree or even a master degree can be attained on-the-job at a cooperation institute.
